Grandson of former Shipstone's chairman at relaunch party

THE grandson of the last chairman of the old Shipstone's brewery was among the first to try the re-launched ale. Patrick Davis said he was "honoured" to be invited to tonight's launch party on the site where Shipstone's used to be brewed. And he was confident his grandfather James L Shipstone would have been delighted the brand is now back on the market. "I was very happy when I heard the beer was being brought back," said the University of Nottingham economics student, of Lenton. "My grandfather passed away a long time ago but he'd be pleased as well. "But it is great for the whole of Nottingham that such a well-known local brand is being brought back." Dozens of people sipped the new brew at the launch tonight in the Star Brewery Courtyard, where Shipstone's was originally brewed more than 150 years ago. The new beer is the work of Nottingham brewery expert Richard Neale and Colin Brown, a former brewer at the original Shipstone's. They have started small, brewing a bottled ale and selling it through pubs and independent distributors in the region. Mr Neale said: "I'm very pleased that we have arrived at the launch stage now. "From here we go on to try to get the brew in as many places as possible. The hard work starts now." As well as being an exceptionally popular beer, the name was emblazoned across Nottingham Forest's shirts in the late 1980s and early 1990s as club sponsor. So Alan Fisher decided to dig out an old Forest shirt with the logo on for the occasion. "I thought 'why not?'" said the 35-year-old of Gedling. "I'm too young to have been able to drink it last time around. "But it is very exciting that it is now back and being brewed again. It tastes pretty good as well." Mark Fenson, 38, of Radcliffe-on-Trent, believes the new beer will be a big success. He said: "Tastes seem to be changing. More young people seem to be moving away from drinker lagers so hopefully Shipstone's can do well. "It used to be a really big brand around here so to have it back is great for Nottingham." Richard Swanwick, 36, of Grantham, said: "It isn't my usual drink but it is good that Shipstone's is back." The beer is being brewed at Belvoir Brewery, in Vale of Belvoir. Mr Neale, a former employee of global beer giant AB Inbev, bought the rights to the Shipstone's name six years ago and decided 18 months ago to chuck in his corporate job and chase his Shippo's dream. The first bottle was poured by Post sub editor Sharon Mitchell, 45, who used to pour pints of it while working at the Tavern pub in Keyworth in 1986 and 1987. She said: "As a Nottingham lass I'm honoured to be pouring the first bottle."

Banned drink-driver sped off in 70mph police chase

A BANNED drink-driver was chased at high speed through the streets of Aspley and Broxtowe after he scraped a police car in a pub car park.

Officers were in the car park of the Newcastle Arms, Aspley, when they saw banned driver Shane Smith in a Ford Mondeo.

He tried to edge past the officer's car but scraped the vehicle down the side, Nottingham Crown Court was told.

One uniformed officer recognised Smith as being a disqualified driver and knocked on the car's window to speak with him.

Despite the officer shouting to him to stop, the 27-year-old drove off along the streets of Aspley and Broxtowe on April 27 this year.

Jon Fountain, prosecuting, said Smith reached speeds of 60mph to 70mph as police gave chase.

In Broxtowe Lane a police officer thought his vehicle was going to be rammed by Smith.

Smith swerved around the car and carried on, believing he had shaken off police in Westleigh Road, Broxtowe Estate.

However, the Mondeo was tracked by CCTV cameras, allowing police to follow Smith to his hiding place behind a caravan.

A breathalyser test revealed 74 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

In court, he admitted dangerous driving, driving when disqualified, drink-driving, driving without insurance and possessing cannabis.

Judge Michael Stokes Recorder of Nottingham, sentenced him to 16 months in custody. He also banned him from driving for three years and ordered his licence be endorsed with penalty points.

The judge ordered that Smith must take an extended driving test if he ever wanted to drive again.

He told Smith, of Silverhill Close, Strelley: "On April 27, when you were a disqualified driver and had been drinking, you got, apparently, into someone else's vehicle and scraped it in the car park of the pub on another vehicle. You were observed by a uniformed officer, who recognised you as a disqualified driver.

"You could have got out of the car then and run for it but, instead, you took part in a high-speed, highly dangerous, piece of driving through Aspley and Broxtowe."

In mitigation, Emma Coverley said: "He panicked when he saw the police and started the car and drove the vehicle on the roads he knew."

100 extra staff to cut 999 times

MORE than 100 extra front-line staff will be employed by East Midlands Ambulance Service to cut waiting times.

It comes after the trust was criticised by health inspectors in a report earlier this year.

The Care and Quality Commission (CQC) found that staff shortages were putting patients in danger because ambulances were not reaching them quickly enough.

Now the East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) has drawn up an action plan to tackle the problems flagged up by inspectors.

A total of 126 new staff – both paramedics and emergency care assistants – will be in place by the end of the year.

And the move has been universally welcomed by unions, campaign groups and paramedics.

Coral Jenkins, Unison regional organiser, said: "The influx of any additional staff can only be seen as a positive given the pressure that the emergency services staff are under."

Community paramedic Bruce Fraser, who is based in Carlton, said: "Any staff are welcome because we have been under the cosh for so long.

"It's important to feel there is something happening so that the effort we put in is noticed.

"It's nice that it's been noticed that we need more resource and that's going to be great for everyone.

"It is something the public would like to see and it will instill more faith in the service."

Other failings highlighted by inspectors included not having enough staff to carry out duties and workers not feeling supported by management.

A spokesman for EMAS said: "After the CQC visit we produced a detailed action plan to address the concerns they raised."

Teacher died after fall on unlit road while on school ski trip, inquest hears

A TEACHER died after he fell more than three metres from an unlit road on a school trip, an inquest had heard. Jonathan Taylor, 44, taught at Christ the King Voluntary Academy in Arnold and was with pupils in the ski resort of Martei in Austria when the accident took place. The inquest heard he had been drinking and socialising with other teachers when he slipped and fell down a steep bank while walking back to his hotel. Father-to-be Taylor lost consciousness within minutes and died as a result of injuries sustained in the impact of the fall in the early hours of March 31. The inquest heard Mr Taylor, who lived with his wife in Arnold, had drunk a "moderate" amount of alcohol during the evening of March 30, after the pupils had gone to bed, and was nearly twice the drink drive limit at the time of his death. Post mortem tests showed he suffered severe injuries as a result of the impact of the fall and coroner Mairin Casey recorded a verdict of accidental death. She said: "This particular section of road was extremely dangerous. It was a poorly lit track. It did not have suitable provision for pedestrians; the edge of the track was crumbling away. "If the accident had happened in this country the police would have been referring the section to the Highways Agency." David Wilson, chair of governors, said: "The Governors of Christ the King School would like to thank students, parents, staff and the wider community for their support and prayers following the tragic and untimely death of Jonathan Taylor on the school skiing trip to Austria at Easter. "During this term, the school has investigated the circumstances surrounding the incident to ensure its policies and supervision expectations were adhered to. "The school can confirm that no students were involved in the incident and that they were safe, in the hotel, under the care of other experienced school staff. "Jonathan was a respected, professional and gifted teacher who is greatly missed in school. Students have and will commemorate his commitment to them in a fitting memorial."

NOTTINGHAM City Council is being invited to bid for a £20 million pot of Government cash to help makes homes greener. The money will be used to help homes install energy efficient home improvements, such as insulation and cladding. The authority will be asked to identify streets and areas that could most benefit from the Green Deal, and then offer incentives to households in these areas to encourage them to have work done to improve energy efficiency. Energy and Climate Change Minister Greg Barker said: "Local authorities really know their areas best. They know which streets and properties most need a Green Deal to improve their energy efficiency, and what local people need to encourage them to get a Green Deal. "This £20 million funding will help more hard working families benefit from the Green Deal, making their homes warmer and more efficient, and protecting them against rising energy bills."

In profile: Forest signing Jamie Mackie

Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of Queens Park Rangers star Jamie Mackie. The 27-year-old striker or winger has penned a three year contract with the Reds. He becomes the second signing in 24 hours, following the capture of Djamel Abdoun from Olympiakos. Born in Dorking, Mackie began his career at non-league Leatherhead before moving to Wimbledon in 2003. He was part of the Wimbledon side that rebranded as Milton Keynes Dons in 2004, but he left the club the following year. Mackie headed south to Exeter City, where over three seasons he established himself as the club's top scorer. He was voted December 2007's Blue Square Premier player of the month. Desperate to break into the Championship with Devon rivals Plymouth Argyle, in January 2008 the 14-goal striker handed in his official transfer request. The Pilgrims had by that point made two bids for Mackie, both rejected by Exeter. The striker/winger had also attracted interest from other league clubs Bristol City, Bristol Rovers and Cheltenham Town. It was third time lucky for Plymouth, who at the end of January 2008 signed Mackie for an initial fee of £145,000 with add-ons. Plymouth manager Paul Sturrock said of Mackie: "He's an exciting talent that just needs to be nurtured a wee bit. "I'm not expecting him to come charging into the team but if you talk to Jamie he's going to be playing next Saturday and that's the kind of attitude I want to bring to this side." Mackie got off to a flying start – he scored within 11 seconds of his arrival on the pitch during his first ever appearance for Plymouth Argyle. Coming on as a substitute against Barnsley in February 2008, Mackie broke the record held by Tony Witter for the fastest goal scored for Plymouth Argyle on a debut. He went on to net a second goal later in the match. Fast-forward two years and Mackie was reported to have caught the eye of a number of clubs, including Derby, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough. By May 2010 QPR's Neil Warnock confirmed he was considering a bid for 24-year-old Mackie. The boss told The Herald: "He's one of a number of players we are looking at. Other than that, I haven't got anything else to say on the subject." Just days later, the signing was confirmed. Mackie penned a four-year contract at Loftus Road, after the two clubs agreed an undisclosed fee. "I'm really pleased to get him in," said Warnock. "Obviously with my connections down there, he's a player I've seen, heard and read a lot about. He was a stand-out striker for them this season. "He's full of enthusiasm and when I first met him there was nothing else on his mind other than playing for QPR." Adored by fans for what QPR described as "his tireless performances", Mackie made an excellent impression during his first season at Loftus Road. He scored nine league goals in a campaign that ended in promotion, and in September 2010 was handed his first Scotland call-up. A few months later, in January 2011, Mackie was ruled out of action with a double leg break sustained during a FA Cup defeat to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. He did not return to training until September. Mackie's first international goal since breaking his leg came in November, and in May 2012 he signed a one-year extension to his QPR contract. The 26-year-old, who scored eight goals in 36 appearances that season, told the club's official website: "To be a part of the long-term future of the club is an aim of mine and I'm really happy. "Now we've stayed up, I think next season could be a really big one for QPR. It's really exciting times." But little more than a year later, finding first-team opportunities limited at Loftus Road, Mackie handed in a transfer request. The striker/winger, who has scored 18 goals in 94 appearances for the Championship club, saw his request reluctantly accepted. Mackie was capped nine times by Scotland and started 17 Premier League matches last season.

Nottingham Forest make Jamie Mackie their second signing in 24 hours

NOTTINGHAM Forest last night secured their second signing in the space of 24 hours, as Jamie Mackie completed a £1m move to the City Ground.

The striker or winger was initially expected to arrive in the city today to complete a medical, but the deal was pushed through late last night.

The 27-year-old has signed a three year contract with the Reds, to become the second signing of the day following the earlier capture of Djamel Abdoun from Olympiakos.

Forest had an initial bid for the striker rejected yesterday morning, but returned with an improved offer that persuaded their newly-relegated Championship rivals to do business.

It was a significant moment for Reds boss Billy Davies, who had tried to sign Mackie during his first spell in charge at the City Ground, when Mackie was a Plymouth player.

Mackie submitted an official transfer request at Loftus Road yesterday to help smooth a path for the deal, after finding himself a peripheral figure under Harry Redknapp.

The signing of Mackie leaves the Reds with a host of options down the flanks – an area the manager had previously highlighted as being a problem within weeks of his return to the club last season.

Having already signed Jamie Paterson from Walsall earlier in the summer, Forest yesterday also completed the capture of Abdoun, in a 2m euro move from Olympiakos.

The 27-year-old has penned a three-year deal at the club and has immediately set his sights on winning promotion.

"At Olympiakos I played in the Champions League," he said. "But Nottingham Forest have already won two European Cups and with the size of the club, we should be playing in the Premier League.

"The objective is to get promotion because the city and the football club should be in the Premier League. That is the aim for the players, the chairman, the manager and the supporters and we will be working really hard to deliver it. I am very happy to sign for this historic club and it is a big opportunity for me to prove my ability."

Forest still retain an interest in Burnley's Charlie Austin, but will face opposition from QPR following their failure to land Celtic striker Gary Hooper, who is bound for Norwich.
