Newark by-election: Voters out in force as election attracts national attention

VOTERS are out in force across polling stations in Newark as the eagerly-awaited by-election comes to a close. The eyes of the country are on the constituency as the eleven candidates hear how their parties fare in the count, which starts at 10pm. The Conservatives are the favourites to maintain their majority, which was 16,000 after the 2010 general election. But a surge from Ukip has led many to believe the election is a two-horse race. Voters in Southwell said the attention of the national media in the town has caused a frenzy and hoped it would encourage a large turnout. Esme McQuillan, 38, of King Street, said: "The eyes of the whole country are on Newark and all the villages around. When you come out of the house you get acocsted even if you're just off to the shops. "That's strange for Southwell as it's quite a relaxed village. We've had the Prime Minister here and endless leaflets through the door, so I think that will encourage a big vote. I'll certainly be voting at least." Early polls suggested Conservative candidate Robert Jenrick is the hot favourite to claim the seat, which was made vacant by Patrick Mercer's resignation over cash-for-questions allegations. Mr Jenrick is up against Ukip's Roger Helmer, an MEP for the East Midlands, Labour's Michael Payne, David Watts of the Liberal Democrats and Green party candidate David Kirwan. In the streets of Newark, Southwell and Lowdham this evening, Ukip tellers were out in force in a bid to chase an early indication of the results. Ukip members Juliette Jackson and her husband Stuart, of Newark, said they were encouraged by the voters they'd spoken to. "People have been shouting nice things across the street, wishing us good luck," said Juliette. "I've been pleasantly surprised." If victorious, Ukip would gain its first parliamentary seat. The party won a majority in the East Midlands and nationwide in the recent European elections on May 22. Mr Jackson added: "I think the Conservatives are concerned. Even if we come second it shows there are now four main parties and there aren't any safe seats in the UK." At the general election in 2010, the Conservatives won with a 16,000 majority over second-placed Labour with Ukip 25,000 votes behind in fourth place. Trev Savage, of Lowdham, said he would be surprised to see anything other than a win for the Tories. "We've been here for 15 years," said the 78-year-old. "And I've not seen a campaign like this before. It's been busy and it's been nice to see some younger voters out. "They've been phoning every day and there are lots of flyers around. I think it's going to be a close-run thing between the Conservatives and Ukip." Prime Minister David Cameron made four visits to the county in the lead-up to the election and Chancellor George Osborne and various other cabinet ministers have been door-knocking in Newark and Bingham. Conservative teller, and district councillor on Newark and Sherwood District Council, said the party was taking the election very seriously. "They've brought all the top brass along," he said. "So much so that you almost think the people of Newark are coming second to the national significance of the vote."Stay up to date with everything at the Newark by-election count on our live blog here

The campaigns have finished and the votes have been cast as counting begins in the Newark by-election. More than 30 counters are at Kelham Hall, sifting their fingers through tens of thousands of votes. Supporters of various parties have started to arrive at the venue as the first box is emptied on to tables. TV cameras are panning across the hall for what is the first televised election count in the UK. One counter, Anne Hikin, has come from Mansfield to do her part. She said: "I counted the votes in 2010 as well. My sister works for Newark and Sherwood District Council so she roped me into it. "It's usually quite busy but it feels like it's going to be busier tonight, with all the media here. So it'll be even more pressure." "I'm looking forward to seeing the result and I'll be looking out for any votes for the Elvis Bus Pass Party. I don't think there will be too many."Stay up to date with all the latest from the count on our live blog hereGet all the latest Newark by-election news here

RAVENSHEAD'S Chris Adcock and his wife Gabby will this summer become the first husband and wife badminton pair to play mixed doubles together for England at the Commonwealth Games. The duo have been included in Team England's badminton squad for Glasgow, along with Nottingham's Peter Mills. Chris will also compete in the men's doubles with Andrew Ellis, while Gabby will team up with Lauren Smith in the women's doubles. "As with the Olympic Games in London, the Commonwealth Games look set to bring the country together and it will be great to compete in front of our home fans again," said Chris. "I have had a good year in both my men's and mixed doubles partnerships, so hopefully I can continue this and bring back some medals." Gabby added: "Having won a bronze team medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, I am definitely looking to improve on that performance in Glasgow. "I have had a very solid year, including winning my first Superseries event, so I hope to build on that success this summer." Mills will make up the second men's doubles pairing with Chris Langridge and says he heads north in high spirits. "I have been looking forward to Glasgow for a long time now and to have been selected to represent my country is a great feeling," Mills said. "With some consistent performances this year, I am feeling confident that we can beat the top players if we bring our A-game." Team England Chef de Mission Jan Paterson said: "Naming this badminton team takes the total number of athletes selected to represent Team England past the 100 mark, which is very exciting. "Badminton has a fantastic heritage in the Commonwealth Games and this will be the sport's 14th successive appearance and I'm very proud to say that Team England have won 33 gold medals during that period. "I'd like to extend a very warm welcome to all of our badminton athletes and I look forward to watching them compete in this superb sport in Glasgow."

Newark by-election: Green Party candidate says Ukip win would be a 'disaster'

The Green Party candidate for the Newark by-election says a win for Ukip in the seat would be a disaster. David Kirwan was the first candidate from any of the main five parties to arrive at Kelham Hall for the count, at around 10.30pm on June 5. The result is expected between 2am and 3am on June 6. Mr Kirwan said: "For Newark to be the first Ukip seat in Parliament would be a complete disaster. "I would rather see the Tories win," said the former Labour man, who lives in Newark. Mr Kirwan said his campaign had gone well, and hopes to come out ahead of the Liberal Democrats in the seat that the Greens haven't stood for since 1992. "We would like to beat the Lib Dems," he said. "But we don't really know how it will go because we haven't stood here for so long. We'd like to make an indent. "We've had a positive response from door-to-door. I've come across old friends and teachers who've wished me well." One teller showed The Post his count, which showed no votes for the Greens, yet one for Nick the Flying Brick, of the Monster Raving Loony Party. "I'm sure that won't be the case at the end of the night," said Mr Kirwan. "A couple of the other candidates are a bit of fun but I'm sure the people will vote for the main parties in the end."Stay up to date with all the happenings at the count on our live blog here

Newark by-election: Transport Minister says Conservative efforts are not a response to Ukip charge

TRANSPORT Minister Patrick McLoughlin has insisted the Conservatives' heavy campaigning in the Newark by-election is not a response to Ukip's European Election results. The minister, who is MP for the Derbyshire Dales, was at the count at Kelham Hall on Thursday night to show his support for Tory candidate Robert Jenrick. Ukip took the majority of votes in the European Elections last month. Prime Minister David Cameron and Chancellor George Osborne were among the well-known Conservatives to show-up in Newark in the run-up to the by-election. The PM appeared four times and took selfies with garage staff and children, as well as leafleting in the area. Mr McLoughlin said: "I think we have had an excellent campaign and we have a great candidate. After the 2010 general election, the Conservatives held a 16,000 majority on Labour and were 25,000 votes ahead of Ukip. When pressed on a prediction for tonight's result, Mr McLoughlin was tight-lipped. "It's been reported that we've sent everyone up here because we've actually been here and we are not ashamed about that. "We have fought other by-elections like this."Stay up to date with all the latest from the count at Kelham Hall here

NICK the Flying Brick entered the counting hall at the Newark by-election to a hearty roar from his supporters on Thursday night. He reinforced his policies of adding piranhas to the River Trent and turning Newark Castle into an extra-terrestrial portal. He said: "I want to beat the Elvis Bus-pass Party and I'm confident. "The people of Newark have taken to my policy of putting piranhas in the Trent to make fishing more of a spectator sport. I'm sure I have the support of the local angling community. Newark by-election: Ukip concede to Conservative victory

Ukip has conceded the Newark by-election to the Conservatives. A party source said they were estimating that Robert Jenrick, the Tory candidate would receive around 40 per cent of the vote while Roger Helmer is likely to get around 32 per cent. The turnout was confirmed at 52.79 per cent at around 00.50 on Friday June 6. But Ukip say the result is still a positive one. In the last general election in 2010, Conservative Patrick Mercer had a 16,000 majority over Labour and 25,000 more votes than Ukip. "It's nonsense to say the bubble has burst," said a Ukip source. "This was the 44th safest Conservative seat and it just shows that no MP with a 10,000 majority is safe. "They've thrown the entire Tory machine here and they came because they were told to. Our lot came because they wanted to." Ukip are also predicting a disastrous election for Liberal Democrat candidate David Watts. "From what I've seen, they might not get their deposit back," said one Ukip teller. "I feel sorry for them really." Meanwhile, Labour candidate Michael Payne's election manager Chris Bryant said his party has suffered because people have turned to the Conservatives in fear of a Ukip win. "The Tories have thrown the kitchen sink, the butler's sink, the pottery, the Aga, the crockery and all the pots at this election. Which shows how worried they are." Mr Bryant conceded that his party was unlikely to win the election. "I doubt we will win," he said. "But I've had a lot of positive feedback for our candidate Michael Payne. We know the real issue in Newark is the hospital. "At one person's door, they told me they were staunch Labour voters but were gritting their teeth and voting Conservative just to keep Ukip out." The results of the by-election are expected at around 3am.For all the latest from the Newark by-election count, click here to see our live blog.

Newark by-election: Conservatives hold seat despite Ukip surge

Conservative candidate Robert Jenrick has won the Newark by-election ahead of Ukip's Roger Helmer. He received 17,431 votes, with Mr Helmer on 10,028 ahead of Labour's Michael Payne, on 6,842. The night also saw a complete annihilation of the Liberal Democrat vote under David Watts, who fell into sixth place with a 1,004 share, behind the Green Party's David Kirwan, who ended on 1,057 votes. Independent Paul Baggaley also beat the Lib Dems, and the Greens, on 1,891 votes - coming fourth place in the results, which were announced at 3.30am on June 6. Mr Jenrick said: "Not for the first time in its history, the eyes of a nation have been fixed on Newark. "We have fought this positive campaign on the issues that matter to the people of Newark. Whether that was infrstructure, the Nottingham to Lincoln train line, securing the future of our local schools, lobbying the Government for funding for flood victims or securing the long-term future of Newark Hospital. "This election does have a wider national significance. The Conservative Party has not won a by-election in Government since William Hague 25-yars ago. "The people of Newark have voted to back this Government." In a hotly-contested seat, Prime Minister David Cameron visited the constituency four times in support of Mr Jenrick's campaign. Ukip leader Nigel Farage arrived with Roger Helmer at the count, but conceded defeat shortly after his 1.15am arrival. But Ukip have made a large dent into the 16,000 Tory majority from the 2010 general election. Ex-Conservative Patrick Mercer, who vacated the seat following cash for questions allegations, ended that election 25,000 ahead of Ukip with Labour in second place. Ukip say the result of the June 5 Newark by-election reinforces Mr Farage's claims that the party is causing a "political earthquake". Roger Helmer said: "I'm proud of our campaign, which was fought be people who were here not because they were whipped to do so but because they supported our cause. "We stood in this election hoping to win and although we did not win but we are encouraged by the fact we have increased our result in the general election by a factor of six and we have halved the Conservative majority. "That is a great sign for the future of our party and our intention to take our campaign to the general election next year in Westminster." Mr Farage added: "I think Conservatives with a majority of less than 10,000 will be looking at this with horror. "The party is growing and has proved it can successfully contest a domestic election." Labour's Michael Payne said he will be standing in Newark again in eleven months' time. "I'm proud of the campaign we've run," he said. "The people of Newark have spoken clearly today and the majority of them have told us they don't agree with the direction of this out of touch Government." He accused Prime Minister David Cameron of being afraid of visiting Newark hospital, which Mr Payne cited as the major issue in the by-election. "I'm not just here for Christmas and I will be back to fight this campaign and I will be holding Roger to account. The people of this country do not agree with the way David Cameron is leading the NHS." Liberal Democrat David Watts defended his party's efforts despite receiving only 1,004 votes as the Liberals continue to lose popularity nationwide. "We never expected to win," he said. "A lot of people have worked very hard on this campign. It was a very small and dedicated team." Not one Lib Dem MP turned up in support of Mr Watts and when pressed on why he guessed the Tories would have spent upwards of £250,000 in Roert Jenrick's campaign. "We are reliant on money we generate locally," he said. "People wanted to make sure Ukip didn't win, so it's no surprise they voted for the Conservative candidate." The seat will be up for grabs once again in less than a year's time at the 2015 general election.

NOTTINGHAM Panthers have signed defenceman Steve Ward as head coach Corey Neilson looks to put together an experienced line-up for next season. Twenty-eight-year-old Ward has played more than 300 games in the East Coast League, with spells at Florida, Charlotte and Alaska. And he has a half century of games under his belt at the higher level of AHL with Albany, Peoria, Norfolk, Portland and San Antonio. "I've talked to players Steve has played with and against and I've talked to coaches who know him. I'm impressed by what I've heard," said Neilson. "He was involved in play-off hockey five years out of five in the juniors and has been in play-off action six times out of the last seven seasons. You can't buy experience, you have to earn it. "He was recommended very highly to us by Brent Hughes who believes he will be a stud on the blueline for us." Ward helped Alaska win the ECHL Kelly Cup and the regular season championship three seasons ago, and he won the regular season championship with them again in 2012-13. He spent last term with the Brampton Beast in the Central Hockey League, though saw his campaign interrupted by an eye problem, which kept him out of action for a while. "He's one of those guys who can play an offensive or defensive role very well for us. He has all that AHL experience and his skating is one of his assets," added Neilson, who yesterday added centre-winger Chris Lawrence to his squad. "I wanted our 'D' to be much more mobile and our forwards to be more physical in the coming season. "The signings of Steve Ward and Christopher Lawrence mean I am happy with what we have achieved with these two guys."

Nottingham shortlisted for England's first 'City of Football' title

NOTTINGHAM has been shortlisted to become England's first 'City of Football' – and will do battle with Manchester and Portsmouth for the title. The title will be awarded to one city in the autumn together with up to £1.6 million of National Lottery funding to run a two-year pilot programme aimed at getting more people – particularly those aged 14-25 years – playing all forms of the grassroots game. The shortlisted cities fought off competition from 22 cities bidding for the title, demonstrating a commitment to uniting public, private and voluntary organisations to do whatever it takes to get more people – particularly those aged 14-25 years – playing all forms of the grassroots game regularly. Over the summer, the shortlisted cities will develop full proposals for how they will get more people in their city playing the game regularly. Sport England will visit each city and work with the consortium to develop these plans. Phil Smith, Sport England's Director of Sport, said: "Football is our national game and we want everyone who wants to play to be able to. "Yet despite demand for the game, the number of over 16s playing regularly is falling. "We want to support one of these cities to become a test-bed for developing innovative ways to get more people playing the game so that we can share best practice across the nation and unlock the latent demand for football that is at the heart of every community. "We look forward to working with each city over the coming months to develop their ideas." Kelly Simmons, the FA's Director of National Game and Women's Football, said: "World Cup fever is about to sweep the nation, and we want to ensure that it will inspire players of all ages and abilities to get out and play football regularly in a way that suits them. "Despite the growth in children's football we are facing challenges retaining and growing the number of adult players wanting to play on a weekly basis. "The 'City of Football' is an opportunity for everyone involved in football to come together to test new ways of opening up football opportunities for everyone. We look forward to sharing our expertise, as well discovering new insights, as the pilot progresses."

Newark by-election: Conservatives pledge to continue General Election push after victory

The Conservative Party has said it will not remain complacent following their win following last night's Newark by-election win. Tory candidate Robert Jenrick received 17,431 votes, with UKIP's Roger Helmer on 10,028 ahead of Labour's Michael Payne on 6,842. The night also saw a complete annihilation of the Liberal Democrat vote under David Watts, who fell into sixth place with a 1,004 share, behind the Green Party's David Kirwan, who ended on 1,057 votes. Independent Paul Baggaley also beat the Lib Dems, as well as the Greens, on 1,891 votes - coming fourth place in the results, which were announced at 3.30am on June 6. Mr Jenrick's win was met with praise from party leadership including David Cameron who tweeted: "In @RobertJenrick the people of Newark will have an MP who will fight for them and work to deliver a brighter future for all." Chancellor George Osborne said it had been an important occasion for the Tories but said the party would not sit on its laurels. "We have won this seat with a big majority," he told the BBC. "This is the first time in 25 years that the Conservative have held a by-election in government. "We can take some comfort from this result but we know, of course, that the job is not done. "We have to get out there and take our message to the other constituencies over the coming year." UKIP leader Nigel Farage, whose party came in second, said the result was a landmark moment. He said: "The Conservatives were 25,000 votes ahead of us here in 2010. "The people's army is getting more professional and better at what it does." With less than five per cent of the total votes, the Liberal Democrats ended up forfeiting the £500 paid to run in the election. David Watts, the Lib Dem candidate for Newark said: "Well it wasn't a good result, but smaller parties often get squeezed in by-elections and that's what's happened to us here." Ahead of the vote Labour's Chris Bryant MP, who ran Michael Payne's campaign, said he felt they were unlikely to win. He said: "Mr Bryant conceded that his party was unlikely to win the election. "But I've had a lot of positive feedback for our candidate Michael Payne. We know the real issue in Newark is the hospital. "At one person's door, they told me they were staunch Labour voters but were gritting their teeth and voting Conservative just to keep UKIP out." Voters in Southwell said the election attention had caused a stir in the town. Esme McQuillan, 38, of King Street said: "The eyes of the whole country are on Mewark and all the villages around. "When you come out your house you get accosted, even if you're just off to the shops." Trev Savage, 78, of Lowdham said: "We've been here for 15 years and I've not seen a campaign like this before. "It's been busy and it's been nice to see some younger voters out." Do you think Robert Jenrick is the right MP for Newark? Email newsdesk@nottinghampost.com

Bodies in garden murder trial: William and Patricia Wycherley buried on top of each other

The skeletal remains of a couple shot and buried under their back lawn were lying one on top of the other in a makeshift grave, a jury heard. A forensic archaeologist excavated the bodies of William and Patricia Wycherley from their garden in Blenheim Close, Forest Town, on October 10 last year. Jurors heard on Friday, June 6, at the trial of the couple's daughter Susan Edwards, 55, and her husband, Christopher Edwards, 57, how the remains of the Wycherleys were only discovered 15 years after their killing. Mrs Wycherley was left in the 90cm by 110cm grave first, followed by her husband, Nottingham Crown Court heard. A bullet was recovered from the bedding enveloping her body and a second was embedded in her spine, a round prosecutors have said was likely to have struck her heart. Mr Wycherley had two bullets in the duvet he was inside, the court heard. Four .38 calibre semi-wadcutter revolver bullets were found and consistent with being fired from the same gun, a .38 calibre revolver. The Wycherleys were shot twice in the upper body as they faced the person with the gun. They lay undiscovered in the garden until police were contacted by Mr Edwards' step-mother. She told them her step-son had revealed he was responsible for helping his wife bury her parents. By now the Edwards were in France, a country prosecutors say they fled to when they received a letter from the authorities saying they wanted to interview Mr Wycherley as he was approaching his 100th birthday. The call to the step-mother was made when the couple, who owed in excess of £160,000 to their creditors, ran out of money. Prosecutors allege the Wycherleys were murdered over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend of 1998 and money cleaned out of their accounts. In all likelihood the shots were fired by Mr Edwards, but it was allegedly a joint plan between husband and wife. The couple sold the Wycherley's home after the killing and spent their cash, prosecutors claim, then pretended they were still alive. They even responded to official letters and inquiries claiming to be them. Both deny murder. The trial continues. For all the latest news on the Wycherley trial, click here

Raider uses hammer to smash window at H Samuel in Nottingham

Shoppers were left shocked after a raider attempted to rob a jewellery store in Nottingham city centre – leaving a hammer hanging out of the smashed window. The incident took place at H Samuel on Lister Gate at around 1.18pm on Friday. A witness saw a man brandishing the hammer and smashing the front window of the shop. But the man then ran off leaving the tool wedged in the broken glass. Nottinghamshire Police, along with community protection officers, were called to the scene at around 1.30pm and surrounded the window to keep the public away from the crime scene. Worried members of staff, obviously shaken by the incident, looked on as a police officer searched the street for any clues. A spokeswoman from the force confirmed: "An offender used a hammer to smash the display window before making off with a fake display diamond." The man was described by the force as white with dark hair. He was wearing black trousers with a white stripe down the sides and a black top. The store was closed while police investigated and a sergeant at the scene said he was unable to give any more information. Passers-by were startled by the incident happening while surrounding streets were teeming with shoppers and workers out on their lunchbreaks. Maria Smith, 19, said: "It is pretty brave of them to do it in broad daylight, I'll give them that! But it is such a stupid thing to do and then to leave the hammer behind, too. "I don't normally hear about this sort of thing happening here so it is quite a surprise. Sophie Keeble, 18, added: "It is so silly to do that and a very weird thing to happen in the middle of the day. Why even try it?" A spokeswoman from H Samuel confirmed the incident and said staff were helping with the investigation. She added: "Our efforts are currently focused upon ensuring the welfare of our staff and we'll be spending time with each of them to offer them counselling following this robbery." Police have asked anyone who saw the incident or with any information to call them on 101 or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Children learn tram safety as overhead power lines are put up

Children have been learning the dangers of the tram as part of a new 'Think Safe, Stay Safe' campaign. The campaign has been launched by NET Phase Two construction contractor, Taylor Woodrow Alstom, as overhead power lines that will run the trams start to go up in The Meadows and Wilford. On Friday morning, staff from Taylor Woodrow Alstom greeted parents at the gates of St Patrick's Catholic Primary and Nursery School, in Wilford, to give them leaflets on the dangers of the tram. It follows a previous visit to the school where children were given a presentation about the tram. Other schools in The Meadows, Wilford, Clifton and Beeston - where the tram is being rolled out as part of Phase 2 - have also been given a special assembly. Jack Lawley, 11, of The Meadows, said: "I learnt that there are going to be new ticket machines put up and that we shouldn't mess with them. We also learnt that there will be test runs soon so we will need to be careful." The overhead cables are suspended from 5.8 metre posts and carry 750 volts - more than three times the voltage found in the average home. They do not pose any direct danger to people unless they are touched or something is placed against them. Lilian Oldfield, 11, of The Meadows, said: "The presentation was quite interesting. I learnt that the tram is going to run through Nottingham and it is going to cause less traffic. There will also be signs to keep you safe." Sakina Farooq, 48, of The Meadows, was handed a leaflet as she took her four-year-old son Zain to school. She said: "I think the tram is a brilliant thing, it saves time and it gets to places quickly so I am glad it is coming round here. "It can't be a bad thing that they are making children aware of the dangers. Some parents have never used a tram before so it [the leaflets] make them aware too. They can then relay that information back to their children. "My son is really interested and has been asking when the tram will start. "He has used the tram before but he forgets quickly. If you keep refreshing it [the dangers] it will stick with them." Further leaflets will be distributed to children and their parents when the first trams are tested on the new lines. Leaflets will also be handed to those businesses and residents closest to the tram lines, informing them of how to work safely around the new lines. Deputy head teacher Carmel Atkinson said: "The children responded really positively in the assembly and asked some wonderful questions that were answered in detail. "I think with the running of the tram fast approaching it is important for them to be aware of the safety of the tram." Andrew Lace, temporary operation manager at Taylor Woodrow Alstom, said: "The power lines are obviously quite dangerous if you touch it, and can be fatal, so it is important we are making people aware that they should not go near them. "We have been telling children to watch out for the trams and do not try to shimmy up the tram poles. They have been quite responsive and have been asking us a lot of questions. "One girl asked what she should do if she got her shoe stuck in the line. I advised her that her safety is more important; leave it and get yourself away from the danger." What do you think?
