Identical twins at Nottingham Trent University graduate with same degree

GRADUATING from university is a great achievement – but for one set of identical twins the success was doubled. Seema and Gulshan Riasat are the same in more than just the way they look. The 21-year-olds both achieved first class honours in Childhood Studies from Nottingham Trent on Thursday. The pair from Carlton have been inseparable since their childhood but gained their independence as well as a degree after being split up by lecturers in second year because they talked to much and used to copy each other. Seema said: "The lecturers did it on purpose because they wanted us to be independent. "It was annoying at first and we were shocked by the decision and asked to be moved back together. "They said no and that was the first time in our lives that we had been apart. "It was good for us in the long run but it was hard at the time because in the first year I was more reliant on my sister. "We both found our independence at uni which is a huge thing for us and in a way I can't believe it." As well as attending university together and taking the same course their other academic achievements are as identical as their looks. They achieved the same A-level grades in the same subjects at Nottingham Academy but getting the same degree result was more of a shock. Gulshan said: "We never expected to get the same results but we did do a lot of studying together. "However, we had to all the coursework separate because we would end up copying each other. "We used to argue a lot about the work and we both always thought that we were right. "The course did get harder towards the end and we worked together day and night. "I think that we did have an advantage over other pupils because we are always together and can help each other and put our two minds together." At primary school they always sat in the same classes. But teachers also had to separate them as they often copied each other's work. Course leader Moira Moran said: "It is very rare to get twins that study together on the same courseand it is the first time that we know of for the university. "When they started they were in the same group but after being separated we were really surprised that got exactly the same mark. "We are very happy for them both."

Thousands flock to the beach in Nottingham's Market Square

THOUSANDS of families soaked up the sunshine on the first day of the school summer holidays – by heading to Nottingham's very own beach. As temperatures soared on Thursday, dozens of children happily played with their buckets and spades at the Old Market Square's Riviera. Parents pulled out their deck chairs and sipped ice cold drinks or tucked into some refreshing ice creams. The square was packed – with families simply having fun. Lisa Green, from Beeston, brought her two-year-old daughter Lashay and 16-week-old son Leighton to the event. She said: "I wanted to get the children out of the house, so this seemed like the perfect way of doing it. "There isn't a beach that's easy to get to – so this is the nearest thing! It's been great to be able to just hop on a bus and you're at the beach. The kids are loving it." The 26-year-old said she was astonished by the crowds that had flocked to Market Square. She added: "It's absolutely packed, but it definitely gives it more of a sea side feel. "We've been on some of the rides and had ice creams. It's been such a lovely day." The event is now in its sixth year and features a giant paddling pool, 250 tonnes of golden sand, a beach bar, rides and free family activities. The next few weeks will also see a wide range of musical performances, including DJs, steel drum bands, historical plays and tribute artists. Lisa Mounteney-Jackson, from Mapperley, had brought her three children James, 12, Charlie, seven, and Isla, four. The 34-year-old said: "The kids have been having a great time – it's a lovely way for them to start the holidays. "Our son Charlie is autistic, so he never sits still. Something like this is perfect for him. "It's great for us as well because it's a free day out – you don't get many free days out these days. "We love spending time together as a family, so what could be better than coming down and playing in the sunshine." Her husband Gordon, 40, agreed, saying: "I love Nottingham as it has so much to offer – events like this are just brilliant. "It's amazing to see so many people all coming together and enjoying a good day out – the atmosphere has been incredible." The Riviera, sponsored by Nottingham Express Transit, is organised by Nottingham City Council and entertainment specialist the Mellors Group. Lee Clarke, duty manager for the event, said: "The number of people who have come down has been phenomenal – I'd definitely say they've come in their thousands. This is one of the busiest days we've had since opening. "It's just a great opportunity for people to go to the beach and not have to go all the way to Skegness. We've brought the seaside to them." The Riviera will be open every day until Tuesday, September 2.

Newark man spared jail after growing cannabis in cellar

Debt-laden landlord Dennis Goodwin confessed all to police about his secret cannabis grow - after he thought it sparked a fire in his rented-out home.

The father-of-two kitted his cellar out with 51 plants, and had extensively researched how to grow and sell online, after finding himself in financial difficulty.

He bypassed the electricity meter at the property, in Victoria Street, Newark, in order to nurture the crop - which would have produced around 2kg of the class B drug, worth £3,000 to £10,000.

But he decided to reveal everything to officers after a fire broke out in the upstairs apartment, which Goodwin believed the fine-tuning of the electricity was responsible for.

Goodwin pleaded guilty to producing cannabis and taking electricity at an earlier hearing.

Nottingham Crown Court heard on Thursday that there was no conclusive evidence that the bypassing of the electricity caused the blaze.

Felicity Campbell, in mitigation, said the 54-year-old roofer was of "good character" and had grown the crop as a short-term solution to his money problems.

Miss Campbell said: "This is a man who was doing this to pay off debts to ensure that his family would not lose their house. The intention was to sell the entire amount to make money quickly."

Judge Michael Stokes QC handed Goodwin, of School Lane, Newark, a ten-month prison sentence, suspended for one year.

Judge Stokes said: "This case is a lesson in how not to deal with debt.

"You have found yourself in debt and so you increased the mortgage on your home and took out an additional loan in order to acquire a property, initially with the view of selling for a profit.

"But that fell through and so you ended up renting the upstairs part of your property. When you unable to make the profit you had anticipated, you decided to start a cannabis grow.

"In 99 per cent of cases, anyone who did that [start a fire from a cannabis plant] would go to prison. This is an unusual case in the sense a small fire started in the upstairs flat. The evidence shows that this was completely unrelated to any of your activity but you initially thought you was responsible for that fire.

"Before waiting to find out if you were, you went to the station and confessed your full activity, which I suspect is a better indication of your true character, better than what you were up to.

"I am quite sure, Mr Goodwin, this will be a lesson to you and we will not meet again."

Goodwin was also given a curfew from 9pm until 6am for 60 days, 120 hours unpaid work to complete over a period of 12 months and a victim surcharge of £100.

MANSFIELD swimmer Molly Renshaw was unable to make the final of the women's 50m breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this evening. In what is the 18-year-old's less favoured event, she finished fifth in heat five in the first session of the Games this morning in 32.72 seconds but this was enough to progress into the semi-finals later in the evening. And despite clocking a faster time of 32.47secs from lane one in the second of these semis, Renshaw could only finish seventh as Jamaican Alia Atkinson posted a Games record in first (30.17secs). Her stronger event, the 200m breaststroke, comes on Saturday at Tollcross Swimming Centre.

Nottingham defends its black cats following claims they don't photograph well

OWNERS have hit back at claims that black cats are not photogenic – by sending The Post dozens of pictures of their pets. According to the RSPCA, around 70 per cent of homeless cats are black. And the charity says the animals are unpopular because their colour means they do not photograph well enough to be shown off on social media by owners who like to post pet pictures on Facebook and Twitter. On Wednesday the Post reported that Millwood Cat Rescue Centre, in Edwalton, has taken in nine black kittens in the last couple of weeks. But following our report, owners from across Nottinghamshire took to our website to show off photos of their black cats. Sheila Mounteney, 63, from Mapperley said: "Black cats are mysterious, they're so beautiful." Ms Mounteney's cat, Milo, three, was rescued after being found in a canal two years ago. "He'd been a stray for around three months and had been trying to get into shops for shelter," she said. "We found him by the canal and brought him home." Lisa Platt, 32, from Bestwood, owns fourteen cats and three of them are black. She said: "I love all cats, mine have such different personalities. Coco and Scarlett, both one, are always by my side, whereas Giger, corr eight, is very grumpy." And Joanna Elizabeth Collis, 22, from Cotgrave said: "My black cat Moppet recently turned 22 years old, so she's the same age as me. "She's slightly arthritic, but still absolutely precious." Millwood Cat Rescue Centre is now looking for good homes for its black kittens. Centre owner Ronnie McMillen, 71, said: "There are still plenty of friendly cats waiting to find their perfect home." If anyonne is able to adopt a cat, black or otherwise, they can call the rescue centre on 0115 923 5704.

BEESTON trio Harry Martin, Adam Dixon and Ollie Willars helped England men's hockey team get off to a winning start at the Commonwealth Games with a 6-1 victory over Trinidad and Tobago.

Martin made the starting line-up for England's opening group match in Glasgow, while Dixon and Willars were both introduced in the first half.

The latter provided a threat with some probing runs as his side enjoyed plenty of possession – and they made it count with some superb strikes from penalty corners.

Ashley Jackson's drag flick found the top corner with seven minutes on the clock to open the scoring.

And two quick-fire goals in the space of three minutes put England firmly in control, as first, Iain Lewers slotted home after Jackson's initial low flick was saved, and then Mark Gleghorne found the net with a fine drag flick.

Trinidad and Tobago pulled one back through Mickell Pierre just before the break, but Martin responded by blasting inches wide to signal his team's intent.

There was no sitting back in the second half as a succession of penalty corners kept Trinidad and Tobago on their toes – Nick Catlin eventually making it 4-1 with less than 20 minutes remaining.

And the final gloss was added to a convincing scoreline courtesy of Phil Roper and captain Barry Middleton.

NOTTINGHAM squash player Alan Clyne couldn't get the better of defending Commonwealth Games champion Nick Matthew in the men's squash singles.

Scot Clyne, who play his domestic game in Nottingham in the National Premier League, had plenty of support from the home crowd but went down 11-4 11-5 11-8 to his English opponent.

After yesterday's two-hour battle over India's Harinder Pal Sandhu, Clyne's challenge came to an end in the last 16 in a little under an hour, on a day when both players were celebrating their birthdays.

He put up a stoic fight in the second game, going 2-0 up and applying the pressure at 8-5, then delaying Matthew's victory in the third – going from 10-4 to 10-8, but the No1 seed proved too strong.

Clyne will now focus on the men's doubles and mixed doubles in Glasgow.

Fashion graduate's African odyssey lands her vice-chancellor's award

LOBBYING governments, founding charities and creating her own label has seen one fashion graduate stand out from the crowd. Pamela Samasuwo-Nyawir was given the Vice-chancellor's Award at Nottingham Trent University's Concert Hall graduation ceremony on Friday July 25 after studying Fashion Accessory Design. The 38-year-old, of Radford, self-funded trips back to her home country Zimbabwe while researching design culture and context. There, she forged links with the Ministry of Education and is working with them to improve the prospects of young African designers. "I'm passionate about my country and the continent of Africa," said Pam. "Designers from outside of Africa draw huge inspiration from the continent but the people rarely get the credit. "Africa doesn't need aid, it needs investment and collaborations so that we can boost the economy through this multi-billion pound industry." Despite climbing Kilamanjaro for charity during her trip and setting-up her own luxury handbag label Vanhu Vamwe, Pam was not allowed to personalise her graduation gown. "I wanted to make it stand out more," she said. "But it's a formal occasion so I couldn't." The former journalist wrote a regular column in a Zimbabwean newspaper during her time in Africa, where she travelled to five countries in three weeks. "Most African designers are self-taught," explained Pam. "There is only one university that teaches design and it doesn't cover important things like understanding trends." As a result of her findings, Pam has set-up non-profit organisation 54 Faces, which has helped forge the relationships with the Zimbabwean government and universities. "A tutor from Trent will go out to run workshops for emerging designers, fully qualified designers and students," Pam said. "I hope to form some sort of exchange programme between Nottingham and Zimbabwe." And Pam has decided to donate the prize money from her award to fund an up-and-coming African designer's education. "I lived in the UK so I had an advantage," she said. "But getting the award was enough so I wanted to give it to someone who doesn't have the chance." Course mate and fellow mature student Dorota Stumpf, 51, of Wollaton, said: "When you're in a melting pot of creative talent, like we had on our course, amazing things can happen." The pair are working on a collaboration project that will see their bags and leather cuffs go on sale in California. "We're all proud of Pam and what she's achieved," said Dorota. "Her aesthetic is great and her passion for Africa is incredible."

Innovative Woodborough farmer hopes his two lakes can solve village flood problem

$

Village flood problems could be remedied by a forward-thinking farmer from Woodborough who wants to build two lakes on his land. John McDonald, who has 16 acres of land in the village, wants to create the lakes to accommodate 80,000 cubic meters of water from nearby stream Dover Beck. He also hopes the lakes will become a nature reserve for passing wildlife. "It's a no-brainer," he said. "I'm a big believer in working with nature, not against it." Plans are yet to be drawn-up for the design, but Mr McDonald has already secured £50,000 of funding from the environment agency and is working with the parish council to find local backing. "It would protect the people of Woodborough's homes and increase the value of their houses," he said. "And it could even create two or three rural jobs." The lakes would absorb the water and delay its flow, meaning the area would be less susceptible to flooding. "I'm by no means promising this will stop flooding in Woodborough altogether," he said. "But if we funneled it downstream it's only passing the problem on to Lowdham." Mr McDonald runs his farm Permiculture in Practice near Bank Hill and runs free weekly organic food rowing courses. "This is a fantastic opportunity for Woodborough to be the first in the country to use something like this. It's very basic - a child could have come up with it - but this could be the start of something big."

Notts County have completed the signing of Wolves striker Jake Cassidy. The Wales under-21 international has signed a five-month loan deal and joins fellow Molineux team-mate Zeli Ismail at Meadow Lane. Cassidy's arrival will help fill the void left by Jimmy Spencer who has been ruled out for the season with cruciate ligament damage. Boss Shaun Derry will hope Cassidy can recapture the form he showed in three spells with Tranmere where he scored 17 goals in 54 games. Cassidy is set to play for Notts in their friendly trip to Halifax tomorrow afternoon.

Lace Market bar The Living Room to be refurbished and relaunched

One of Nottingham's busiest bars is set to undergo a major overhaul. The Living Room in the Lace Market is set to become Missoula Montana Bar and Grill from September. A closing party for the Living Room will be held on Sunday, August 24 before refurbishments begin. It will then be reopened under the new name with a provisional launch date of mid-September. Ten new jobs are set to be created by the revamp, on top of the venue's current team. The change has come after The Living Room chain was bought by Stonegate Pubs in August, the owners of the Missoula brand. It has already converted two Living Room premises, one in York, another in Milton Keynes, under the Missoula name. Living Room Lace Market manager James Aspell said the move was being eagerly anticipated by staff. He said: "We have been talking to the new owners about this for the past six months. "The Living Room is not fresh anymore - we need something new and The Living Room is no longer that. "The new place is on-trend, with an Americana country feel but the great service will stay the same." Although offering a similar experience to The Living Room, with a new cocktail range in the pipeline, it will also provide a new menu, including breakfast, specialising in American cooking. For Mr Aspell its cornerstone will be its USDA steaks which he believes "will be the best in Nottingham." Reflecting on his time at the Living Room over the past six years, he said: "My resounding memory has been the guests who have come here to drink and eat here have been absolutely fantastic. "We hope they will all be coming to our new bar and grill." The number of customers at the Living Room, according to Mr Aspell has improved since August. Kate West, 31, from Arnold, who has visited on a number of occasions said: "It had got a little bit dated in comparison to other similar places in the area" "I will definitely give it a visit when it reopens in September, it sounds like it's going to be pretty nice". However Simon Blackburn, 28, from West Bridgford disagreed, adding: "It's one of my favourite places to go on a night-out. I think it would be a shame to see it change."

Highly-rated keeper Dimitar Evtimov signs new Nottingham Forest contract

DIMITAR Evtimov has signed a new two-year contract at Nottingham Forest.
The highly rated Bulgarian keeper has been at the club for four years, having joined as a 16-year-old.
Forest have a talented crop of keepers, with Karl Darlow and Dorus de Vries ahead of Evtimov in the pecking order.
But the 20-year-old is regarded as a bright prospect at the club, who have now tied him down for the next few years.
Evtimov said: "I've been at the club since I was 16 and it's like a dream come true to sign a new deal.
"When Stuart Pearce came in he said the staff were happy with the way I was training and developing and that he had heard good things about me from the previous caretaker manager, Gary Brazil.
"So he asked me if I would be willing to sign a new deal and I said 'Yes, of course. That's my dream.'"
Evtimov was handed his first team chance as a substitute at Leeds United last season, coming on for the final stages after de Vries had been injured.
But he accepts that he may have to continue his development by going out on loan again, having previously been at Ilkeston, Gainsborough and Nuneaton.
"You never know, maybe I can have a chance here," he added.
"But if not I would love to go on loan to get some experience."

For mum-of-three Rachel Rose, a fun day at her local park was the perfect way to start the summer holidays.

The Vernon Park Summer Fun Day is an annual event organised by Nottingham City Council to bring families together to enjoy a range of activities and entertainment.

Rachel, of Basford, said she decided to go along to the event after visiting last year with her children Declan, nine Ruby, eight, and Roisin, five.

The 29-year-old said : "The event is good because we get to see other people as well, and it is usually other people we know.

"It's something for the kids to do now it is the summer holidays too. This year, they really enjoyed the petting area because they got to hold a chick and guinea pig."

Declan said he particularly enjoyed having a go at the climbing wall.

He said: "We went to see the animals then we went on the bouncy castle and the climbing wall. I think the climbing wall was the best because it was challenging. Coming back down was fun."

The event attracted hundreds of families to the Basford park on Friday, with other activities including archery, facepainting, fire engines, sports taster sessions, water zorbing, and a bungee run.

There was also free bike checks, health and careers advice, live music and dance performances and a range of food stalls.

Janina Bacon, 37, of Basford, said the event was a great way to keep her four children entertained without breaking the bank.

She said: "It brings people together, has a great family atmosphere and is fun for the children."

Her youngest, Ellie-May, seven, said: "I got my face painted. I got a butterfly because I love them. I like the sparkles on it."

Simon Birmingham was helping to run the Friends of Vernon Park stall.

Simon, who is the treasurer of the group, said: "The event has been a great way to get people to the park. Some of the money we raise from the stall will help us to plant the woodland area to make it look nicer."

Nottingham Forest to change name of City Ground, report claims

IT is being reported that Nottingham Forest are poised to announce a sponsorship deal with the Kuwaiti government which will see the name of the City Ground changed, it is claimed. The Mail Online are saying that Reds owner Fawaz Al Hasawi has agreed the deal to rename the stadium the Kuwait City Ground Stadium or KCG Stadium and that the players will also have a Kuwait logo on their shirts this season. There is no source to the story, only stating that 'Sportsmail understands'. Fan sites have been talking about this issue for a few weeks since an interview appeared on a Kuwaiti website, although there has been debate about the accuracy of quotes from that interview with Al Hasawi, which may have been lost in translation. The Forest chairman has been back in Kuwait for some time, following the end of last season, and is thought to have been trying to find new sources of income for the club. He is understood to be flying back into the UK over the weekend and could even be in attendance for this Sunday's pre-season friendly at MK Dons. But whether the City Ground's famous name is set to be changed ahead of Stuart Pearce's first competitive game as Reds boss on August 9 at home to Blackpool is unclear and remains unsubstantiated.
