Notts police officer Kez Bostock will face sharks on oar-inspiring mission to cross the Atlantic

A POLICE officer will face sharks, a lack of sleep and the challenge of his life when he attempts to row across the Atlantic.

PC Kez Bostock is part of a seven-man team who will attempt the 2,900 mile journey in a world record time next month.

The Notts Police officer and the rest of the crew will try to row from Puerto de Mogan, Gran Canaria to Port St Charles, Barbados, in less than 30 days.

PC Bostock, 42, an ex-Royal Marines Commando, ended up on the team after his tattoo was spotted by an organiser at a boat show.

The dad-of-two has the design of the long-distance Ironman triathlon logo on one leg after completing two previous events.

After talking to him, organisers thought he was made of the right stuff and offered him a place.

PC Bostock said: "More people have climbed Everest than have rowed the Atlantic – it's quite an extreme challenge, it's you against Mother Nature."

Each member of the team will row for two hours and then sleep for two in shifts so their boat, Titan, can smash the current record by two days.

PC Bostock, who is more used to breaking down doors on raids as part of the force's Tactical Support Group, is training two-and-a-half hours a day on a rowing machine in his house and is also running and cycling.

He added: "You think about risks a bit more as you get older, but my wife Emma supports me – without her backing me I wouldn't be able to do it. She keeps me together.

"Things like this don't come around often. I feel privileged just to be given the opportunity.

"I just can't imagine breaking the record. I just think the whole thing would be humbling."

GPS trackers will monitor the team's progress and they will stay in touch with land by using a satellite phone, although there will be no support boat. They will set off around January 8.

PC Bostock is collecting sponsorship for Help for Heroes as part of the challenge. To find out more visit www.titanrow.com.

Notts County fans are getting that sinking feeling

TALK about sick notes. There was not one, not two, but three at Meadow Lane.

First there was Lee Hughes, who is said to have shocked Notts County with one saying he can't play until January. Then the Magpies had to stomach a controversial equaliser and, worse still, a late, late defeat against Brentford, one of their rivals in the promotion race in League One.

Boss Keith Curle and his players were not alone in feeling pig sick by the end either.

Their fans did too. It was all too much for a lot of them, in fact, and they began streaming out of the stadium after Bees' striker Clayton Donaldson scored a goal on 88 minutes to inflict a fifth home league defeat of the season on Notts and knock them down to eighth in the table.

Curle took his time to re-emerge from his office after the final whistle because he watched the key moments back on video. There was no need, in truth.

It did not take a slow-motion replay to show Brentford midfielder Adam Forshaw was a yard offside before he scored on 37 minutes to make it 1-1. Nor did it take one to prove the Magpies were badly caught out for Donaldson's dramatic winner. They were not so much napping, but comatose.

And so the question mark still hangs over Meadow Lane, quite literally, because while Notts are one of only two teams in the country unbeaten away, an impressive record they share with Manchester City no less, they have won just four of 11 home league games this season and have dropped 19 points.

Many people hoped their 1-0 win against Swindon Town three weeks ago was going to spark the Magpies into life at Meadow Lane, but the fear their home form will end their ambition of finishing in the top six will be back with a vengeance now. And it will, unless they improve quickly.

Notts were, of course, missing their star midfielder and match winner against the Robins, Alan Judge, through suspension as well as Hughes and their leading scorer Yoann Arquin, who has netted seven times this season.

And while they were boosted by the return of on-loan midfielder Andre Boucaud and winger Jamal Campbell-Ryce they badly lacked a goal threat.

They didn't even score their own goal. It was an own goal. Julian Kelly, who was restored at right-back and was the Magpies' best player, whipped a cross into the six-yard box on 20 minutes, after a neat interchange of passes with Campbell-Ryce, and Bees' centre-back Tony Craig sliced an attempted clearance straight into his own net.

Their best chance to score in the entire 90 minutes came after less than a minute – and even that came from a defensive mistake.

Captain Neal Bishop played the ball forward from close to the halfway line, on-loan striker Chris Iwelumo prodded it on towards the penalty area and Brentford defender Harlee Dean should have cleared it, but he got in a mess and it fell to Francois Zoko. Inside the box, one-on-one with the visitors' goalkeeper Simon Moore, the Ivorian forward should have scored, but his low shot was saved.

Notts created only two more chances and both of those fell to defenders.

Centre-back Dean Leacock, who was eventually forced off with a hamstring injury at half-time, forced Moore into a good save with a close-range header on six minutes and left-back Alan Sheehan then almost marked his 50th league game for the club in spectacular style in the second half.

Damion Stewart, who replaced Leacock at the heart of the Magpies' back-four, swung a cross into the penalty area from deep on the right on 77 minutes, Bishop headed it back to Sheehan and the Irishman let rip with a venomous volley that was dipping under the bar until Moore tipped it over.

That was it, however. Notts did not create any more memorable chances to score.

Brentford equalised on 37 minutes, though how the linesman did not see that Forshaw was offside when Marcello Trotta fed the ball forward for him to race onto is a mystery. He was right in front of him and it was as clear as day from a lot further away at the back of the Derek Pavis Stand.

The Magpies' arms went up, but the flag didn't and Forshaw made sure, seizing onto the ball unchallenged and firing it low past Notts No.1 Bartosz Bialkowski and into the bottom left corner of the net.

Level unjustly, the Bees went on to boss the second half, while Notts were a shadow of themselves. They sat too deep, which only invited pressure from the visitors.

The game still looked to be destined to end in a draw though, which would have been the ninth successive stalemate between the two clubs, but then Notts fell asleep at a corner in the dying stages and were stung.

While they were slowly organising themselves inside the penalty area to try to repel Brentford one last time, Harry Forrester took the corner quickly to defender Shaleum Logan, he squared the ball to Forshaw and he drove a shot at goal.

Stewart blocked on the line, but the ball only looped up into the air, however, and the powerful Donaldson beat Bishop to it to bundle it inside Bialkowski's left-hand post from point-blank range.

That was that. It was so late Notts had no time to even attempt the latest of fightbacks, though they must now stage a stirring response not only against Rotherham United in an FA Cup second round replay tomorrow night but also Leyton Orient. Both are on home soil. Both must be won. It's as simple as that.

League One results: Bournemouth 1 Colchester 0, Crewe 1 Bury 0, Doncaster 1 Coventry 4, Leyton Orient 1 Scunthorpe 3, MK Dons 1 Hartlepool 0, Oldham 0 Swindon 2, Portsmouth 0 Preston 0, Sheff Utd 0 Tranmere 0, Shrewsbury 2 Carlisle 1, Stevenage 1 Crawley 2, Walsall 2 Yeovil 2.

Notts County boss coy over Hughes injury

NOTTS County boss Keith Curle has refused to confirm if Lee Hughes is out until January.

The striker, 36, is said to have shocked the Magpies with a sick note that says he can't play until the new year.

He was not in their squad as they dramatically lost 2-1 to promotion-rivals Brentford at Meadow Lane, even though he was available again after serving a three-game ban, but Curle would not be drawn on the situation.

"I will be speaking to Lee and we will see where we go from there. As soon as we can get him back available and back into the club the better," was all he would say when quizzed on the matter by the Post.

It comes almost a month after Hughes was set to leave Notts for Port Vale on loan, only for the move to fall through because the paperwork was completed three minutes after the loan deadline.

The Magpies were also missing their seven-goal leading scorer Yoann Arquin and star midfielder Alan Judge as their eight-game unbeaten run was ended by the Bees – and Curle felt it left his side with no cutting edge.

The Londoners were gifted the lead midway through the first half when Julian Kelly's cross into the six-yard box was sliced into his own net by Tony Craig.

But Brentford hit back through Adam Forshaw and Clayton Donaldson to inflict a fifth home league defeat on Notts.

"It's hard when instrumental players like Alan Judge, Yoann Arquin and Lee Hughes, who are the goals in your team, are not available. That's what we didn't have – a goal threat," added Curle.

Notts face League Two Rotherham United in an FA Cup second round replay at Meadow Lane tomorrow night and are sweating on the fitness of defender Dean Leacock, who was forced off at half-time on Saturday (hamstring).

BREAKING: Former president of Union of Democratic Mineworkers Neil Greatrex ordered to pay back stolen thousands

The former president of the Union of Democractic Mineworkers Neil Greatrex has been ordered to pay back tens of thousands of pounds he stole from a charity for sick and elderly miners. Greatrex, who is in his early sixties, from Stanley, Sutton-in-Ashfield, was found guilty of 14 counts of theft at Nottingham Crown Court on April 3 and later sentenced to four years' imprisonment. Now he has been ordered to pay back £201,327.51 within 28 days or face a further three years in jail. The amount represents the money Greatrex, who was a trustee of the Nottinghamshire Miners Home, stole - £148,628.83 – plus the increase in value of this due to inflation. The money will be paid as compensation to the home. Prosecution costs of £9,098.86 were also awarded by the judge. Greatrex's conviction followed years of investigation by South Yorkshire Police. The charity had set up a trading subsidiary called Phoenix Nursing and Residential Care Home Limited to run the care home, Phoenix Care Centre, which was the former name of the home. Greatrex wrote cheques to the sum of almost £150,000, drawn on the accounts of both the trading subsidiary and the charity and used this money to pay for improvements at his private home. South Yorkshire Police's Economic Crime Unit Manager, Graham Wragg, who led the investigation, said: "We are aware of our responsibility to victims of fraud and will strive to make the best use of Proceeds of Crime Act legislation to ensure that they are compensated, wherever possible. "As head of the union and trustee of the home, Greatrex was given a position of trust to care for sick and elderly miners. He abused that trust by stealing from the very people for whom he was supposed to care." Michelle Russell, the Charity Commission's Head of Investigations and Enforcement, commented: "The theft of charitable funds is absolutely unacceptable and damages public trust and confidence in charities. We welcome this outcome, which highlights that this kind of crime does not go unpunished, and secures the return of the money taken for charitable purposes. "The Charity Commission has worked closely with South Yorkshire Police on this case and opened our own statutory inquiry into the charity in August 2007. When criminal proceedings concluded, we resumed our investigation and will publish a report once it is completed."

University of Nottingham student blogs: A student's take on viral videos

Gemma Ubah, 3rd year Economics student at The University of Nottingham, writes about her week as part of the University's Student Life Blogs There has been a lot of talk about the norovirus in the media recently, also known as the 'winter vomiting bug'. It's all a bit depressing really. Nevertheless, 'virus' is the inspiration behind this blog, but the "good" kind...VIRAL VIDEOS!

Within each year of University, a new viral video seems to appear out of nowhere. Said video plagues conversations, Facebook, and general news. "OMG, Have you seen…"…"It's so bad but so good"…"Where do they find these people?" So here is a run-down of the viral videos from my time at University.

Freshers' year

Yep, Rebecca "which seat can I take" Black! (44.9 million views)

This is one of those 'so bad it's good' ones. Not just because it's really catchy and with easy to learn lyrics, but Rebecca Black genuinely seems to love Friday! And who can blame her right? Who doesn't love the day before the weekend begins.

On the other hand, she seems to find it necessary to tell us the order of the days, you know, just in case we forget that "Sunday comes afterwardssss" Saturday. And don't even get me started on the rapper in the middle of the song. I truly find him baffling because it is unclear where he is going. If he is meant to be chaperoning the party, he is running late! The party has already started! So maybe the song should be about efficient time keeping? Perhaps a 'Friday Part II' is imminent…

Second year

These two girls sing about the tough life they have as "hot girls" who have problems too, just like you, except they're hot. (16.3 million views)

Again, I praise the songwriter(s) for developing such a catchy tune and providing my housemates and I with some entertainment. I also love their accent when they say 'problems'...reminds me of Amanda Bynes' show on Nickelodeon from back in the day.

My biggest dislike is that it is set in one place. I have a thing about music videos set in one place, don't know why, I just do! Furthermore, they obviously have never tried to walk up Portland Hill when there's 80mph wind blowing in your face. Now there's a real problem!

Final year

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH2-TGUlwu4&feature=youtu.be

A mate showed me this a few weeks ago. (89.6 million views)

I'm not sure what to say about it, except.. nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan…

There is also a 10 hour version on YouTube… (why??????)

NOTTINGHAM Forest's club credit card was refused at a hotel in Brighton – but not for financial reasons – the Post understands.
A mistake was made when paying a bill during their trip to the south coast, on Friday and Saturday, for the clash with their Championship promotion rivals.
The problem arose when a number was read out wrong when making a payment over the telephone.
Off-field matters were also the centre of attention late on Saturday night when Forest announced chairman Omar Al Hasawi had stepped down from the role due to "personal reasons".
The Reds' majority shareholder Fawaz Al Hasawi, who owns 75 per cent of the shares, has taken over as chairman and said he plans to "spend even more time at the club".
Fawaz's brother Abdulaziz Al Hasawi has 20 per cent ownership in the club, while the duo's cousin Omar Al Hasawi remains a shareholder at the club, with five per cent, despite stepping down.

Irish youngster Stephen McLaughlin of Derry City to have Nottingham Forest talks

STEPHEN McLaughlin is to hold talks with Nottingham Forest over a possible move to the City Ground, according to the Derry City winger.
The 22-year-old recently had a trial with the Reds and the Irish youngster will travel to Nottingham tomorrow to hold talks with the Championship club.
If those talks are successful, McLaughlin could undergo a medical on the same day ahead of securing a deal, which could see Forest pay up to £200,000 for his services.
"I go over on Tuesday, but nothing has been agreed yet," said McLaughlin.
"It has been a long couple of weeks, not knowing what was going to happen, but hopefully now things are moving and everything will be sorted out.
"It would be a nice Christmas present, but I'm going over for talks on Tuesday and see what happens from there."
He told the Londonderry Sentinel: "If I get the opportunity to sign for Forest then yes I'll be over the moon, who wouldn't be delighted?
"I enjoyed my time with Forest (on trial), yes it's a massive step up from League of Ireland, because there is better players, better facilities and better training.
"Once I got over my nerves at the start of the week I was OK and I got on alright, their training wasn't a major shock to me.
"Yes it was quicker, but once I got up to speed I was fine; I think I was nervous because you just don't know what to expect, but when I was leaving I felt grand and that I did OK."

School Embracing iPad Technology to Inspire Learning

A Nottingham junior school has introduced iPads into the classroom to help inspire pupils and teachers in enjoying exciting new learning experiences and boosting the children's potential to learn through technology.

All pupils at The Elms Junior School and Nursery in Long Eaton are using the new iPads in their ICT lessons while the school plans to increase its investment in the tablets to support further technology-driven learning in other lessons in the near future.

New research by Durham University found that highly-interactive multi-touch, multi-user desks can boost skills in mathematics, with enhanced engagement, problem-solving, collaboration and knowledge sharing between pupils increasing their information retention. The study showed cooperative learning helps pupils interact and learn in a different way.

iPads can have a similar impact as their intuitive and fun nature makes pupils want to use them, and show and discuss what they are doing with their classmates. Nearpod software links the class iPads to the teacher's iPad, allowing the teacher to observe how the children are doing, send quiz questions to the whole class and see what they answer with.

More and more education apps are now being developed specifically as linking technology and learning becomes ever more relevant in a 21st century classroom.

Mr Keith Morrow, Head of The Elms, explains: "Children learn better when they are fully-engaged in what they are doing rather than passively listening. There is a natural inquisitiveness and chatter in the classroom when the iPads are in use, which, led by the teacher, encourages children to explore and share ideas, which aids learning.

"We want our staff to be at the cutting edge of teaching and the iPads are a very useful cross-curricular tool, with not only the education apps proving extremely useful but also its audio-visual tools, books and creative functions providing the potential for diverse, creative and, most importantly, memorable learning experiences for both our pupils and staff."

The teachers use the iPads in a number of ways including as an interactive whiteboard, on which they can display Powerpoint presentations and screen shots of the different learning steps with explanations. The school also plans to invest in Apple TV in the future, so teachers can connect their iPad with the TV and demonstrate a live iPad.

Although the iPads are only currently used in ICT lessons, they support the whole range of subject areas in a variety of ways, such as thesaurus (English), drawing programmes (Art), movie maker (Technology), times tables (Maths), flags and capitals (Geography), history calendar (History), religious stories (RE) and Puppet Pals Play creation (English Literature). There is also an after-school Maths iPad activity group.

As well as the new iPads, The Elms also has Kindles, which are used in reading groups and are proving a popular way to better engage children in reading books using technology.
