All flights in and out of East Midlands Airport have been suspended after a Spitfire's front wheel collapsed after it landed.

The small aircraft, carrying just a single pilot, landed safely at 3.20pm but its front wheel collapsed leaving it stranded on the tarmac.

At the moment there are not believed to be any serious injuries.

The plane was scheduled to land at the airport.

A spokeswoman for the airport said: "All flights have had to be suspended while the aircraft is recovered from the runway."

Flights are expected to be suspended until 7pm.

As of 5pm, five flights had been diverted to Birmingham, including arrivals from Glasgow and Belfast.

Passengers are being advised to check in as normal for their flights.

A spokesman for the Air Accident Investigation Bureau said it would be looking into the circumstances of the incident.

He added: "We are aware of the incident and will be investigating it via correspondence.

"There will be a short report complied in due course."
