A TEAM of National Grid employees are swapping their day jobs to take part in a charity pylon climb to support the Prince's Trust.

The one-off event is taking place on Wednesday when 10 members of staff from offices around the country will try to reach the top of a 50-metre pylon at the company's Learning and Development Centre in Eakring.

John Tyler, training manager at Eakring, said: "Normally it is only our engineers who are allowed to climb pylons, to carry out essential maintenance work. We're making an exception for this because it is in support of a worthwhile cause.

"The pylon this team of volunteers are climbing on Wednesday is used specifically for training. It is not live. Each volunteer has received extensive training and will wear the necessary safety equipment. They will also be supervised by experienced National Grid trainers."

The climb has been arranged as part of National Grid's corporate fundraising campaign, Million Makers, established to promote sustainability, innovation and volunteering while raising money for the Prince's Trust.

Other events have included turning old gas and electricity equipment into items such as plant pots and coasters and commissioning a local artist to create a sculpture for an Electricity North West site.

The National Grid is hoping the climb will boost the Prince's Trust coffers by more than £2,000. Sponsorship is already at £1,800 and the company is set to match that contribution with a donation.
