Cutting police officers was an unfair disgrace

HOW can it be that Notts Police now have the money to recruit 150 new police officers ("Thousands expected to apply as recruitment begins for 150 PCs", Post February 25) when only a few months ago they sacked some of their most experienced, and in some cases senior officers using a blatant misinterpretation of the Police Regulations to do so? Regulation 19A was enacted to enable chief officers to dispense with the services of the bone idle, sick and weary bad back brigade, not to enable the bean counters to balance the books. I am not surprised that the officers dismissed are appealing to the employment tribunal and I wish them the best of luck. The whole exercise has been a disgrace.

A CORRESPONDENT wanted to know about our average or overtime energy supply from renewables. The Government will publish last year's details in July. Initial figures show variable clean British wind power produced 5.5 per cent of UK electricity in 2012, peaking at 12 per cent in February this year, the preliminary figures show – an increase of a third on 2011 (at 4.7kwh average each household ).

In terms of gas supply, the UK imported a lot more gas through pipelines – up 25.9 per cent for our average of 30 per cent electricity from gas power generation. Liquefied natural gas imports were down 45.3 per cent.

Nuclear power varied due to unreliability issues. As I write, Torness and Hunteston have been fixed and total 7Gw or 14.9% at 3 per cent efficiency before their massive retirement due to age at taxpayers' expense of around £86 billion.

IT'S been 50 years since the word "Beatlemania" was coined. I am working on Beatlemania – A Year In The Life 1963, a day-by-day account of the Beatles that year. I am looking to hear from anyone who saw them in Nottingham in 1963. They appeared at the Elizabethan Ballroom on March 7 and the Odeon on May 23 and December 12.
