NOTTS County Council has stumped up £25,000 from its Olympic legacy fund to help nurture talented young players at a village cricket club.

Burton Joyce Cricket Club, based in Station Road, will spend the money on new artificial surfaces for the practice nets which will help to develop the club's next generation of talent.

And chairman Howard Mew said the funding will help support the club well into the future.

He added: "Funding for sport is hard and it's difficult to find sources of money.

"But this £25,000 will be very welcome. It will allow us to train up the senior teams as well as supporting our younger sides.

"We are a small village club really, but we want the best for our players and having good facilities will make people stay and enjoy the sessions."

Mr Mew, who has been a member of the club since 1981 and played as a "steady batsman", added: "We're seeing more people want to join the club, which is promising.

"It's all about getting more people interested in our game and this money is a boost."

Around 45 Notts sports clubs are celebrating after each received a big share of the council's £1.7 million Sports Legacy Fund.

The authority set it up to make sure last summer's London Olympics could lead to more people being able to play sport.

And yesterday, more than £1 million was handed out to clubs across the county after their bids were accepted by the culture committee at the council.

John Cottee, culture committee chairman at the authority, said: "We are delighted the Sports Legacy Fund has captured the imagination of local people and it is superb that so many clubs took the time and effort to apply.

"Again, we had a lot of interesting applications to the Game Changer fund and hope this money will make a real difference to successful clubs.

"We anticipated a need for sports funding following London 2012 and the response has been terrific.

"We are also determined to ensure we build on the legacy of the Games without delay."
