FRIENDS of a hit-and-run victim have spoken of their shock.

Ella Scholfield, 19, was walking home along Derby Road, near Barak Lane, at 2.30am on Thursday when she was hit by a dark-coloured car.

The driver did not stop and drove off toward Canning Circus.

Ella, a second year sociology student at the University Of Nottingham, was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre, where she was in a serious but stable condition last night.

Her friend Claudia Adolphus, 19, a second year psychology student, saw the aftermath of the accident.

She went to the hospital with Ella, who is from Buckinghamshire.

"I was coming home with one of Ella's best friends and we saw the big scene," she said.

"We were just standing there thinking what is going on?

"My friend then got a phone call and he dropped to the floor. I just thought 'oh God' and he asked me to go to the hospital with him."

It is believed Ella was making her way home from Crisis, in Talbot Road, a student night for which she sells tickets, when the incident happened.

Claudia added: "She is such a nice, bubbly, fun person. She is outgoing and up for anything. We just can't believe this has happened."

Another University of Nottingham student, who asked not to be named, said the car was travelling at about 40mph.

"Somehow she's got away with a few broken bones and cuts and bruises," she said.

Mike Dore, equal opportunities and welfare officer for the University of Nottingham's Student Union said: "We support a full police investigation and encourage any witnesses to come forward."

Friends have been tweeting their support for Ella. User @AmyCapelo said: "Hoping @ellascholfield gets better very soon. We're all thinking about you, let me know anything you need xxx"

Police are still trying to trace the driver. Witnesses, or anyone with information, should call DI Ged Hazelwood on 101, extension 800 2245. Alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
