NOTTS County Council is set to sell a seven metre strip of land in Bestwood Village for £1.
The land is needed to build a footbridge over a railway crossing where five people have died in the last four years.
The authority's finance and property committee is set to meet on Wednesday and is expected to approve the sale.
A report about the issue said: "The northern part of the site has minimal recreational, leisure or environmental benefits and therefore, can be considered for disposal for a scheme that has much higher public safety requirements."
The plans for the new footbridge over the level crossing where five people have died in four years have been submitted to Ashfield District Council last week.
The crossing in Bestwood Village has been temporarily closed for six months while the plans are developed.
Martin Frobisher, route managing director for Network Rail, said: "We are progressing the scheme as quickly as possible in order to restore the route over the railway and tram line.
"The decision to temporarily close the level crossing was taken in the interests of safety following a number of tragic incidents. We are grateful for the support of Notts County Council in granting the order.
"We are committed to getting a structure in place quickly whilst also taking local opinion into account and have been working with the council and NET to develop our plans."
