A SIX-YEAR-OLD boy swam two miles in two hours to raise money for a cancer ward at the Nottingham City Hospital after his grandad was diagnosed with the disease.

Plucky Cole Herman swam 128 lengths in one hour and 56 minutes on Sunday, April 7, in the pool at Hucknall Leisure Centre.

The Carlingford Road resident took part in the sponsored swim along with the rest of his family, and raised more than £1,000 for the ward which cared for his 56-year-old grandad, Paul Gray, who was diagnosed with a type of blood cancer known as lymphoma last year.

Cole's dad Ryan Herman, 29, said he was extremely proud of everyone who took part.

"I think Cole pulled off a fantastic achievement.

"I'm proud of him and everyone who helped us raise money.

"He didn't stop once, he just went for it."

Ryan's wife – and Mr Gray's daughter – 29-year-old Lauren Herman, who works on the check-out at Tesco in Hucknall, also took part in the swim and completed 200 lengths in one hour, 40 minutes.

Ryan himself swam 100 hundreds lengths and even his four-year-old daughter Ava completed 30 lengths of the 25 metre pool.

"It was a real collective effort, thank you to everyone who donated money," said electrician Mr Herman.

Mr Gray was also present at the event and swam around 60 lengths to raise money for the ward which kept him alive.

Since being diagnosed his lymphoma has been down graded to low risk.

After the swim a raffle was held in the upstairs room at the Bowman Flaming Grill in Nottingham Road, Hucknall, which was organised by Mrs Herman's sister Megan Gray.

Donations can be sent to 15 Carlingford Road, Hucknall, NG15 7AE.
