A PUB in Mansfield town centre is closed to trade after it was raided by police on Saturday afternoon.

Officers were responding to tip-offs and complaints about suspected illegal activity at the Crown and Anchor pub in Queen Street.

Five people – four men and a woman – were arrested on suspicion of a number of drug-related offences. They are all from the Mansfield area and remain in police custody for questioning.

Further arrests are expected to take place over the coming weeks.

Quantities of substances believed to be controlled drugs were seized when a 30-strong team of police officers, police community support officers and special constables raided the Crown and Anchor at around 4.20pm.

A cordon was placed around the pub until 8pm while a detailed search was carried out.

A request is being made to the licensing authority to suspend the pub's licence.

Neil Williams, Neighbourhood Policing Inspector for Mansfield South said: "Make no mistake, Mansfield is a good place to visit and enjoy a safe night out. However, a minority of licensed premises let the rest of the responsible traders down and harm the reputation of our town.

"Today, we have responded to complaints from the community about suspected illegal activity at the Crown and Anchor and acted on intelligence from members of the public to take this action.

"We consulted with our partners before taking this action and, together, we will work to ensure all licensed premises in Mansfield are operating legally and safely."

Anyone with any information is asked to call Notts Police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
