NOTTS Police has spoken out to reassure the public following the terrorist murder of a soldier in Woolwich, London.
Drummer Lee Rigby, of 2nd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, was hacked to death in daylight on Wednesday in front of horrified onlookers by two men.
In the immediate aftermath of the barbaric assault, video footage emerged of the men clutching bloodied weapons including a meat cleaver.
A Notts Police spokesman said that while there have not been any incidents in the county as a result of the attack, there were potential concerns.
"We monitor current events both nationally and internationally in a bid to be informed, prepared and able to respond, where necessary, to best protect the residents of Nottinghamshire," he said.
"The attack in Woolwich is a prime example of an incident which has understandably affected and unnerved people across the country, if not the world. It would be remiss of us not to respond to potential concerns in our communities.
"As always, we are doing all we can to keep you safe. In partnership with the local authorities, we operate robust high-visibility Police and Community Protection patrols on a daily basis to deter crime and provide reassurance in our neighbourhoods, and we will continue to do so.
"We will not tolerate any actions that may cause harassment or fear in our communities or compromise the safety of the public."
Anyone who feels they have been a victim of any form of discrimination or harassment should call Stop Hate UK on 0800 138 1625. Alternatively report it to Notts Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
