THE new tram bridge at Nottingham station will be featured on the One Show tomorrow night. The secrets behind how the 104 metre long, 14.5 metre wide, steel tram bridge was slid by the NET contractor, Taylor Woodrow Alstom, into position over a live railway and main arterial route into the city will be revealed. "The idea that such a colossal structure could be moved along with a few bottles of washing-up liquid and half a dozen sheets of Teflon was just incredible. And all the while, passengers boarded their trains below, completely oblivious." said BBC One Show researcher Stuart Blackburn. Michael Anderson, Project Director at Taylor Woodrow Alstom, the NET Phase Two design and construction contractor, said: "The bridge slide has been a significant civil engineering success story for the project as a whole. Not only is it a spectacular structure but the skills involved in moving it into place should not be overlooked. The second stage of the slide went exceedingly well and was finished ahead of schedule – we are now looking forward to completing the remaining elements over the coming months." The final act involved in moving the bridge into position involves removing the temporary steel 'nose' which helped guide the bridge on its 150 metre journey from a nearby worksite and over the platform buildings and train tracks at Nottingham Station. The 'nose', which is clearly visible from Station Street in the city, will be removed over the coming nights. Two further bridges will also be built at each either end of the station tram bridge which will span Queens Road and Station Street, and together all three bridges will collectively be known as The Karlsruhe Friendship Bridge. Work on the bridges is expected to continue until the end of this year.
