NOTTINGHAMSHIRE Police have thanked thousands of residents and visitors who helped make Armed Forces Day in the city a spectacular success. Around 100,000 people attended a series of parades, events and displays in both the city's Old Market Square and Victoria Embankment. Members of the Royal Family and members of the Government attended the day to honour and thank the country's servicemen and women and to remember fallen colleagues. The policing operation of the day was commanded by Superintendent Paul Anderson who said the event had been a huge success. Speaking as the event drew to a close at 6pm on Saturday, June 29, he praised the many thousands of people who had helped create "a brilliant, family atmosphere". He said: "Months of planning had been undertaken with many partner bodies especially Nottingham City Council and the military to ensure today was a happy, safe and thoroughly memorable event – and all that hard work has paid off. That the sun came out just made it even better. "Hundreds of police officers, support staff, PCSOs, Specials and community protection officers worked from the early hours of the morning to ensure the event was enjoyed safely by everyone."
