A FORTY foot dragon led a procession through a Notts village on Saturday marking the start of a historic community show.

The parade marched through Radcliffe-on-Trent as hundreds lined the pavements to watch the Nottingham Boys' Marching Brigade, including the Mayor of Rushcliffe, Councillor Brian Buschman, and his wife Vivienne.

More than 4,000 people are believed to have attended the show which took place on Saturday and was organised by a group of just eight volunteers.

One was Danny Brennan, 50, who said the reason the show was set up was to fund community projects. "This event is all about sustaining the community spirit," he said.

"The money we make from the show we donate later to various groups to keep community projects in the village going."

The show has been a regular feature in the village calendar since the end of the Second World War

Mr Brennan added: "It certainly has a lot of history and it's an event many people are determined to never let die."

Enjoying a sausage in the shade was Paul Wellin, 32, from nearby Newton. He said: "It's a fantastic show, but it's too hot. I need to cool down."

One highlight was an all-female classical singing act known as Bella Divas who performed in the main arena to rapturous applause, impressing with their harmonies. "They are ever so good," said Paulina Wildman, 42, of Bingham

"That was beautiful. I'd pay to see them again."

As well as the usual home-made food and craft stalls there was also a glitter tattooist for children and a gymnastic performance from the Dako Flying Angels.

Milling about among the crowd was Roger Upton, vice-chairman of the parish council, he said: "It's fantastic to see so many people here.

"I believe people have come from far and wide to be here, enjoying the sunshine."
