SUNSEEKERS jetting away in search of warmer climes might be better staying at home.

With temperatures in Nottingham hitting 29.1C over the weekend, the city was warmer than Rome and Nice and on a par with Barcelona.

And the good news is the warm weather is here until at least next weekend, according to forecasters.

Among those sunning themselves in the Old Market Square this weekend was 28-year-old Helena Tavcares, of Aspley. She said: "I've just been enjoying the good weather while it lasts – it's so much nicer when it's warmer. People are all out enjoying themselves and it finally feels like summer. I just hope it doesn't change too soon."

David Rogers, a 22-year-old student from Lenton, said he was glad the good weather coincided with a good result for England in the cricket.

He said: "I've seen that quite a few Aussies have come over to watch the Ashes and we want to put on a good show for them, and I guess that includes the weather too.

"It's been great weather for cricket and for lounging around with a few beers – and the right team won at Trent Bridge, too."

The Test match might be over, but the good weather is here to stay, said Charlie Powell at the Met Office.

He said: "The pattern going forward into the week is for things to stay very much the same. The only difference is the low cloud that Nottingham had on Sunday won't feature and temperatures will climb to possibly 27 to 28c on Monday.

"And the weather looks like staying the same – the high pressure will remain throughout the week and possibly into next weekend."

Usually when the weather is so warm, there are short thunderstorms to clear the air, but apart from a shower in Newark and Southwell over the weekend, this hasn't happened.

"Not all the ingredients have been there," Mr Powell said.

"We've got the high temperature and the moisture, but there are a few more little things that need to happen before it gets showery and the risk of rain and storms is very low for the week."
