Ukip have conceded an apparent early defeat to the Conservative party in the Newark by-election. An account claiming to be the party's official account in the constituency tweeted: "We think we have fallen a few votes short of victory tonight but we'll be back in 2015 as the only serious challengers to the Tories here." It came as a final Newark by-election poll predicted a comfortable win for the Conservatives. Released after voting closed, the Survation poll put the Conservative share of the vote at 42 per cent. UKIP were put at a 27 per cent vote share, while the poll predicted 22 per cent for Labour and four per cent for the Liberal Democrats.At Kelham Hall, near Newark, more than 30 counters are in place at Kelham Hall to sort the thousands of votes.With the eyes of the nation on the constituency, voters told the Post the media attention had caused a frenzy. Candidates pounded the streets during the final hours of the campaign on Thursday as their Twitter accounts showed. The vote comes after Patrick Mercer resigned in April following cash-for-questions allegations. Early polls have suggested the Conservatives are leading the way to reclaim the seat vacated by former Tory MP Patrick Mercer.
