New Police Commissioner Paddy Tipping: 'Bring back police horses'

NEW Notts Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping has called for a rethink of the controversial move to scrap the Notts Police mounted section.

The decision to disband the unit is being reviewed only two months after it was broken up.

Staff were redeployed and all seven police horses moved to new homes in September. The section was ditched to save £104,000 a year as the force battled to save £42m from its budget under Government cuts.

But the scrapping, approved in June by Notts Police Authority, attracted opposition from the public including a petition signed by more than 2,000 people.

Mr Tipping, left, said: "People have expressed discontent that it has gone and I promised them I'd review the decision and I will."

A report now being drawn up by the force will state what it would cost to reform the unit.

A decision is expected before the end of January.

Former police authority member Alan Street said a U-turn could cost £400,000.
