AS the flood waters recede, the Notts clean-up has begun.
River levels fell yesterday, having reached a peak at about 6pm on Tuesday.
Authorities claimed the damage had not been as bad as first feared, though some were still left counting the cost.
JK Design and Manufacture Limited, in Colwick Industrial Estate, had to stop work on Tuesday when water began seeping into the building.
They were back to normal yesterday, though one of their machines was out of order. Owner Jackie Wilson estimated the floods had cost them £20,000, adding: "It has had a real impact on the business, but we'll keep going – we have to. There isn't too much you can do."
Other businesses were still closed yesterday.
Sat Bains' restaurant in Lenton Lane was closed because it was inaccessible. Meanwhile, activities at the National Water Sports Centre were again cancelled.
The Environment Agency stimated that dozens, rather than hundreds, of homes were hit. One village badly affected was Zouch, near Normanton-on-Soar, where the Soar burst its banks.
Jayne Dolby's home escaped flooding as it is built on stilts, but she had to use waders to get to and from her door.
She said: "The water has started to go. A lot of mess has been left behind."
Sue Walker, co-ordinator of Woodborough Flood Group, said major problems had been avoided, adding: "They closed the roads off quite quickly. We did have to help a couple of elderly people out."
Many will be relying on claiming on their insurance. But a deal between the British Association of Insurers and the Government to protect those at risk from sky-high premiums ends next year. The National Flood Forum says some people, including some in Notts, are having difficulty renewing.
And Notts County Council says this week's flooding will cost tens of thousands of pounds, including the cost of providing sandbags and disruption to highways work.
Rob Fisher, head of emergency planning, said: "There are still some road closures in place and people can find the latest information on www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/disruption."
The National Farmers' Union says that flooding had a minimal impact, as wet weather from the summer had already damaged crops.
