CITY centre traffic ground to a halt yesterday after a teenage boy has been hit by a tram.

The collision happened at the Royal Centre tram stop on Goldsmith Street shortly after noon whilst the teen was skateboarding.

Witnesses said they saw him on his skateboard before he was hit and sent flying onto the pavement.

The tram was stopped half-way across Upper Parliament Street, meaning traffic was unable to pass, and queues of cars and buses mounted up all the way back to Wollaton Street.

Crowds gathered at the scene as the boy was attended to on the pavement by police, who were the first emergency services to arrive.

One witness said: "We were walking up the street with the kids and saw him on a skateboard. I noticed him because the kids have got a skateboard so I pointed him out to them.

"Then the next thing I know he is being pushed along by the tram and ended up on the pavement. It was mad."

East Midlands Ambulance were also called and arrived at the scene a few minutes later.

The skateboarder had a cut to his wrist and his leg was propped up on his skateboard.

A spokesman from Nottingham Express Transport (NET) said: "We can confirm that a young man was involved in a collision with one of our trams at Royal Centre this morning. An ambulance was called and he received treatment at the scene before being taken to hospital.

"We will be looking into the full circumstances surrounding the accident, but until all the details are known we are unable to comment further."

The spokesman confirmed tram services to and from Hucknall and Phoenix Park were temporarily terminated at Royal Centre, and to and from Station Street at Old Market Square, but normal services were up and running by the afternoon.

A spokeswoman from Nottinghamshire Police said they attended the scene at 12.10pm.

She said: "A boy, believed to be in his late teens, who was in collision with the vehicle was taken to Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre with suspected minor injuries.

"The road was blocked for about half-an-hour while the scene was examined and cleared."

The police have now appealed for witnesses to the incident, asking them to call 101, quoting incident 328 of 29 August 2014, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
