A prolific Lenton shoplifter is to spend Christmas behind bars after breaching his Criminal Antisocial Behaviour Order (CRASBO). Michael Roberts, 44, of Douglas Road, stole £170 worth of clothes from H&M in Nottingham despite being banned from every shop in the city. Store staff challenged him, but he threatened them, saying he had just been released from prison for murder. Despite the lie, staff detained him until police arrived and arrested him. Roberts was previously handed a CRASBO in October this year, which banned him from city shops for two years after being found guilty of four shoplifting offences. When Roberts was put before Nottingham Magistrates' Court again on Tuesday he was jailed for a total of 20 weeks after pleading guilty - eight weeks for the theft and 12 weeks for breaching the CRASBO, to run consecutively. Inspector James Woolley, from the Integrated Offender Team, said: "Michael Roberts will now be spending Christmas in prison as a result of partnership working and the sharing of intelligence between the police, Community Protection teams, Nottinghamshire Businesses against Crime, Probation and the courts. "This means he will not be able to cause harm to the local community and businesses over the busy Christmas period. This is a stark warning to all shop theft offenders - if you offend in Nottingham we will catch you and you will be dealt with using the full force of the law." Nottinghamshire Police joined forces with a wide range of partners to launch Operation Dormice in July this year, a 12 month pilot to tackle shop theft in the city. It involves police working with Probation, the Substance Misuse Team, the Criminal Intervention Team, the Drug Interventions Team and the Prison Service. Police and partners target the most prolific offenders in an attempt to prevent their offending behaviour from escalating.
