A LAWYER will be dressing up as an elf and taking selfies on Tuesday in a bid to raise money. Part-time Nottingham Trent University law lecturer, Deborah Cartwright, is helping her Godson, William Cannon, to raise money to go and teach sport in South Africa. She said: "I will be teaching from nine to six dressed as an elf, and people will be able to take a selfie with me. "Everyone who takes a photo will be asked to make a donation to Will's JustGiving page, before sharing it with their friends on Facebook or Twitter." The 54-year-old, who lives in Strelley Village, hopes that Elfie Selfie day will go viral to help raise as much money as possible for William, who is currently volunteering for the organisation, Skillshare International. William, 17, who lives in Cambridge, will be working with Skillshare International's, Coaching for Hope programme in Southern Africa, in February next year. It is not known which area of South Africa he will be based in to coach sports to disadvantaged and disabled children, for ten weeks. Some of Deborah's students have also volunteered help by putting on their best elf hat. As well as lecturing part-time at the university, Deborah is also a practicing solicitor, meaning standing out from the crowd is not something that she is nervous about. The mother-of-two will be travelling in to the university, on the tram, from Phoenix Park in fancy dress. She said: "I'm not a shrinking violet — but I think that I may get some funny looks on the ride in. "My partner has made me some stickers to hand out to people on the tram with the details of the JustGiving page." Deborah has already raised money for William's fundraising attempt from small donations from her students. William said that he was very grateful for his Godmother's help so far. He said: "It is absolutely fantastic, and without her help I wouldn't be able to raise the amount I have, because I am working full time. "I would ideally like to push the total past £2,000 to £2,500." William's mother, Penny Cannon, added: "I am delighted - Deborah is a great character, and has done a lot for charity over the years." Any money raised exceeding William's £1,500 target will be donated directly to the organisation. A spokesperson for Skillshare International said: "Any donations that help to meet and exceed the target will absolutely help us keep running." Around 90 per cent of the money that Skillshare International receive is a government donation, with the other ten per cent is a result of the fundraising by the volunteers.
