A supermarket price war has broken out over lobsters and I was all set to cash in... but they've sold out.
Lidl, Asda, and Iceland are attempting to lure the middle classes with cooked Canadian lobsters for as little as £5.
Waking up to the news this morning I knew straight away: that's lunch sorted. I shot down to Sainsbury's to pick up a bottle of La Terrasse Chablis (£11.50) and was all set to live the high life with a gourmet, dream lunch.
But by the time I turned up at my local Lidl in Beeston at 11am the freezer was bare. Just a sorry side of salmon left.
The lonely ticket on the top of the appliance revealed Lidl lobsters had been on sale at £5.99. One can only imagine the Black Friday style scenes as the posh lot from Beeston Fields Drive fought it out with wannabe Wollaton Roaders. Legs and claws scattered in the scuffles.
The lobsters are the latest luxury food to join the front line of the supermarket's Christmas price war.
Oysters, fine wine, and jamon serrano (fancy ham) are already deployed at low prices to tempt shoppers in.
The supermarkets are taking advantage of a fall in the price of lobster and a stronger pound against the Canadian Dollar.
While lobster still costs £20 on the menu of a High Street restaurant like Loch Fyne, Scottish lobster fishermen have a had to tough time in recent years. The quayside price has been stuck at around £8 a pound for the best part of 10 years, while costs such as fuel have spiralled.
Now crustaceans are flooding in from Canada 3,000 miles away.
Unfortunately for me, they were not around long enough to make it the last 200 yards up the road to my house. #hungry.
