Roads funding: Hard shoulder of M1 to be opened in bid to beat congestion

Congestion on the M1 near Nottinghamshire is to be tackled - by opening up the hard shoulder to motorists.

The Highways Agency is already planning to upgrade 19 miles – between junctions 28 near South Normanton, and 31 near Worksop – by making the hard shoulder an extra lane.

And the Government has announced today the motorway is to be given the same treatment between Junction 24 for East Midlands Airport and Junction 25 for the A52.

It is part of a £15 billion package for roads announced by the Treasury and Department for Transport.

Other schemes announced include planning to dual the Newark northern bypass, and replace the A46 junction with the A1 as well as improving the M42 east of Birmingham and creating a tunnel along a busy route near Stonehenge.

Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: "Today I am setting out the biggest, boldest and most far-reaching roads programme for decades. It will dramatically improve the network and unlock Britain's economic potential.

"Roads are key to our nation's prosperity. For too long they have suffered from under-investment.

"This government has a long term plan to secure the country's future and this £15 billion roads programme is demonstration of that. It will directly benefit hardworking families across the Midlands."
