James Taylor must wait as weather delays England reply against Sri Lanka in fifth one day international

JAMES Taylor will be hoping for another chance to impress with the bat for England today after the fifth one day international against Sri Lanka was held up by rain. England bowled out the hosts for 239 before inclement weather struck in Pallekele with Chris Woakes having taken six for 47. The tourists must now hope they get the chance to make it 3-2 in the series with the reserve day set to be taken from 9am tomorrow – weather permitting. Notts batsman Taylor will bat at three after scoring 90 last time out. The spot was vacated by county team-mate Alex Hales after he was dropped to accommodate the return of captain Alastair Cook. There was also no place for Notts seamer Harry Gurney. Kumar Sangakkara made 91 for the hosts, his fourth successive half-century. His contribution was hugely significant considering the pitch offered plenty of turn to encourage Sri Lanka's four spinners going into today. Sangakkara and captain Angelo Mathews put on 95 – a partnership that took the hosts from 59 for three towards a reasonable total. But, after Mathews top-edged Chris Jordan, Woakes had Sangakkara caught by Joe Root and then he ran through the lower order. The Warwickshire all-rounder mixed yorkers and short pitched balls to become the first England bowler to register a second six-wicket haul in ODIs, his first coming against Australia in 2011. Off-spinner James Tredwell, recalled in place of Ben Stokes after being omitted for the previous two matches, also bowled well with figures of one for 39. His two maidens were as many as the rest of the England bowlers have managed in the rest of the series combined. With Moeen Ali and Root also sharing 15 overs, England adapted to the conditions by delivering 25 overs of off-spin. Cook, back after a ban at the expense of Hales to reclaim the captaincy from Eoin Morgan, decided not to use the medium pace of Ravi Bopara, although Sri Lanka's moderate total perhaps vindicated his choice.
